Children exposed to alcoholism
and other drug addictions to continue to get help from area resource
Mill Spring, NC – Thanks to a sizeable grant from The Duke Endowment, this region’s premiere center for the treatment of alcoholism and other drug addictions will continue to reach at risk children in North and South Carolina.
Pavillon today announced it has received $50,000 to continue administering its Children’s Program throughout the Carolinas. The latest award of support is part of a $150,000 pledge from The Duke Endowment.
“We are delighted that the Duke Endowment shares our commitment to reaching at risk children in the Carolinas regarding the affects of this devastating family disease,” said Anne Vance, CEO of Pavillon. Pavillon’s Children’s Program promotes healing and wellness for children who have a family member who suffers from addiction. The program builds upon children’s strengths, deepens their resilience and further helps them to realize their own intrinsic worth.
Potential participants of the program are identified through working closely with area school systems and many social service organizations.
In the area of prevention, scientists from the National Institute of Drug Abuse are specifically studying the issues children face in a home with alcohol and drug abuse and the increased risks they face.
Three areas are being targeted for research: family functioning and parenting, early problematic childhood characteristics and psychological skill enhancement.
A risk factor for addiction takes the form of early conduct disorders such as depression and acting out. Prevention of the possibility of eventual drug and alcohol abuse in these children must include helping them intellectually in the areas of setting goals, analyzing and solving problems, dealing with strong feelings, recognizing and controlling impulses, and helping them to begin to realize that their loved one's addiction is not their fault. Pavillon’s Children Program specifically addresses these key issues.
The program is free to any child, ages 7-17, who has family members with alcohol and/or drug addiction. Weekend sessions are scheduled throughout the year on Saturdays and Sundays 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. We also offer a Children's program for the children of our in-house patients that also serves children ages 7-17. This program is run at the same time as our Family Program services.
Children engage in educationally therapeutic and fun activities each day. For confidential information, or to register your child, please call Pavillon at 800.392.4808. Ext 133.

The Pavillon is pleased to announce the opening of The Pavillon Professionals Extended Residential Care program offering services to adults, age 25 and over who need and may benefit from structured, medium-intensity, residential services designed to advance recovery from substance use and related disorders.
Patients will have had some residential treatment immediately or very recently prior to admission. Patients who are impaired healthcare or other professionals whose employment, licensing and/or living circumstances may require an extended residential services setting would also benefit from such a "step down" level of service following the Pavillon or other primary level of care.
The Extended Care program is based on proven, effective technologies and applies evidence-based practices delivered with culturally sensitive competence. Addiction is a treatable, chronic disease and research has identified effective treatment approaches.
Research indicates that healthcare practitioners, other professionals and/or people in safety sensitive roles such as pilots who participate in at least 90 days of residential care plus several years of supervised recovery monitoring have exceptional recovery outcomes. Healthcare and other professionals who are mandated to treatment from licensing boards or such monitoring/advocacy programs will find the program to focus on their specific needs. Such issues related to stigma, connection to recovering professional peers, accountability and return to work planning and advocacy are incorporated into the program and addressed in an individualized treatment plan.
Patients will benefit from a structured day program combined with homelike sober living residence which is safe and conducive to advance early recovery gains made during primary treatment. Patients will have their needs assessed and managed in an individualized manner and participate in a program structure designed to provide therapeutic activities in group, individual and peer support format.
